Since March, music streaming and purchasing platform Bandcamp has waived its revenue share every first Friday of the month. What started as a day of relief and aid for musicians in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s interruption of the industry has become a monthly tradition that artists and patrons alike look forward to. The result? A big shift in the discourse around artist payment, a boost in traffic to the service itself, creative merchandise and compilation releases on first Fridays, and millions of dollars flowing directly to the artists. Today is the last Bandcamp Friday of the year, and a great day to buy merch and records from queer artists.
Here’s a roundup of artists (and one record label) we’re excited to support today.
Get Better Records
Get Better Records is artist owned and operated, helmed by queer and trans musicians who are intentional about making space for other queer voices in music. Today, Get Better Records released a limited edition long-sleeve t-shirt, but you can also find their full merch line and releases from their roster of aritsts on Bandcamp.
Dump Him
A queercore band from Massachusetts, Dump Him has seven releases available today including “Dykes to Watch Out For,” a full length album with one of the best titles of all time. Also available in their shop is a zine about queer icons Tegan and Sara.
WAZI
Wazi is one half of Tender Bois Club, a music and creative production collective that he co-founded in 2018. Today, you can purchase WAZI’s must recent single, “On Virtual,” and his full-length album “Beats in the Basement.”
LK Ultra
We wrote about LK Ultra’s recent single “Pussy Hat” earlier in the year, and today you can purchase the track on Bandcamp. All proceeds from the track’s sales on Bancamp will be donated to Black trans women.
True Lions
HearQueer sweethearts True Lions have four albums on Bandcamp today, including an EP of covers and a set of demos that demonstrate the heart and character at the core of the group. With a new album on the way, now is the perfect time to brush up on this band’s tender punk & multi-instrumental discography.
SuperKnova
SuperKnova makes queer pop that breaths new life into an otherwise sometimes suffocating industry. Among several other releases on her Bandcamp is a recent track, “The World is Ending, I’m So Bored,” an apt reflection of the very social and cultural conditions that prompted Bandcamp Fridays in the first place.
